Insided is a group exhibition presented by the arist collective Binder of Women. The exhibition brings together the work of Alice Browne, Gabriela Giroletti, Lauren Godfrey and Pia Pack at OUTPOST Gallery, Norwich, UK.
Insided…two or more surfaces. A ‘line’ of space in between. Interval. Abutted. Fissure. Lacuna. Gap. No matter how close, there is always an IN-side. A space that is not fixed. A place where dust can gather and bacteria can grow. An internal facet. The space between artworks, between columns, between doorframe edges, between tiles and buildings. What takes place here, what potential exists in these openings of negative but not empty space? Can we place our imagination in this space? Can we conceptualise the non-existence of the insided?
Described by Brazilian arist Lygia Clark in the 1950’s as ‘The Organic Line’ and revisited by historian Irene V. Small in her recent book of the same name, this anti-heroic creaton resists gesture, it is ’a breath, a blade, a trace of air, a gutter and furrow; a void that irrigates and cleaves; a crevice and cleft that differentiates matter and ruptures the plane…it is a line devoid of a mark’ [Small, I. V. (2024), The Organic Line, New York: Zone Books].
The artists in this exhibition playfully explore the creation of internal facets and thresholds in their own works as well as respond to the architectural insides of the gallery. Each artist has created new works for the exhibition, encompassing a range of media including vinyl, textile, painting and photography.
