By tracking herring, whose migration routes remain free of any notion of national frontiers or allegiances, the project aims to trouble the concept of maritime borders. Studying how marine life is impacted by geopolitical divisions, herring views borders from three perspectives: the small-scale fishing communities, the fishing industry, and the schools of herring.

translucent, tunable screens aresuspended from the gallery beams to divide the space into a sculptural performance space. These membranes act as a respiratory system for the gallery, vibrating in sympathetic resonance with atmospheric sounds and a custom score.

This pilot project visualises hidden networks of influence by pairing artists from across the UK with a peer or mentor who has shaped their practice. The exhibition is the launchpad for a national summit to address the sector's future needs and produce a national call to action publication.
