OUTPOST is pleased to present its first independently selected members’ show. Artist Gavin Turk made the selection in response to material submitted by the membership (240 in number) to the OUTPOST archive.
The twenty artists selected represent the diversity of practice and material contained within the members’ archive. The works range from a single re-contextualised museum label to a subterranean steam installation in the courtyard of the gallery. Between these acts of appropriation (Thompson) and humour (Davenport), Turk’s selection reveals a somewhat classical strain, with over a third of the exhibiting artists presenting works employing painting and drawing.
Rising to the challenge of staging a large group show within the modestly sized space of OUTPOST, Turk’s deliberations have pulled together a sense of the elemental from each artist, with the individual pieces chosen for their potential to interact as a whole.
Gavin Turk
Lives and works in London and has exhibited extensively, including participation in such important group exhibitions as Istanbul Biennial (1999), ‘Century City’, Tate Modern, London (2001), ‘Remix: Contemporary Art and Pop’, Tate Liverpool (2002) and ‘Coollustre’, Collection Lambert en Avignon (2003). Solo exhibitions include South London Gallery (1998), Centre d’Art Contemporain in Geneva (2000), The New Art Gallery, Walsall (2002) and Schloss Eggenberg, Graz (2006). Gavin Turk is represented by White Cube, London.
OUTPOST
Is an artist run gallery based in Norwich. It was founded in November 2004 with financial support form Arts Council England East, Norfolk County Council, Norwich City Council and Norwich Gallery. It presents a core programme of 12 exhibitions per year - selected from the membership archive and a wider remit - each exhibition opening on the 1st of the month. A programme of events is also run that includes film nights, critical forums, group exhibitions and artists' talks.
OUTPOST members archive
Is a physical collection of documentary material housed at OUTPOST. Members of the gallery’s artist membership scheme (for details see www.norwichoutpost.org/about) are entitled to submit documentation of their practice in any format (not exceeding A4), with the material used as a source from which exhibitions can be selected and allowing independent curators to gain a greater knowledge of members' works.
