Josée Aubin Ouellette, The Shape of the Cutlet

Josée Aubin Ouellette studied Painting at The University of Alberta, Canada then graduated with a MFA from The Glasgow School of Art in 2012. Josée Aubin Ouellette’s work encompasses sculpture, writing and performance to look at the unsettling conditions of contemporary embodiment. Recent projects have taken the form of performances and activities with materials that facilitate collective actions. Reading and music have become increasingly important in creating collective experience presenting text.
The Shape of the Cutlet is a new performance work using 30 kilograms of unformed Quorn, or mycoprotein, as material for a communal reading. Feeding the text line by line to the group, bringing together and portioning out the dough, the formal and performative qualities of the material took on multiple forms as a narrative and literal alternative to flesh.
