About Catalyst Arts Gallery, Belfast, Northern Ireland

Belfast's primary artist-led organisation, Catalyst Arts (Catalyst) was formed in 1993 and continues to operate as a non-profit, members-based, artist-led organisation. It seeks to adopt a poly-vocal strategy towards the promotion of contemporary art practices by selecting artists and projects from the widest possible range of disciplines. Previous directors include Duncan Campbell, Susan Philipsz and Phil Collins.

Catalyst, initially based in Exchange Place, made an exchange with Transmission Gallery as its first show in July 1993. Catalyst operates from a large industrial space in the centre of Belfast, neighboured closely by similar organisations such as Platform, Flax Studios, Golden Thread Gallery, PS2 and Queen Street Studios. It's directors curate a programme of gallery exhibitions, events, screenings, residencies, workshops and offsite projects. With a rolling 2 year structure, the voluntary board of directors act in the interests of Catalyst's three hundred members, providing a variety of opportunities including open calls with partner institutions such as Media Phyat (Finland), La Station (Nice) and MonsterTruck Gallery (Dublin).

In 2015 Catalyst is focusing its programme on developing models of traditional exchange by building partnerships with neighbouring and peer organisations. The OUTPOST member will be working in the entire gallery for three weeks, with an option to extend the residency by one week. This fourth week is an opportunity to present a solo show in the gallery. Whilst resident in Belfast, the OUTPOST member will receive full technical, promotional and logistical support from the Catalyst directors. The artist will be provided with a budget to cover travel, accommodation and materials in addition to a daily stipend for the duration of the residency. A proportion of the total budget has been allocated to providing some mentoring, which can be arranged in dialogue with the selected artist to ensure a relevant group of people are invited to studio visits.
